Hospital Unimed Coração Vitória Mailing address: Jorge Elias Neto Rua Alfeu Pereira, 60 Cep 29050-190 Vitória, ES, Brazil E-mail: [email protected] Received for publication: 1/27/03 Accepted for publication: 2/24/04 English version by Stela Maris Costalonga The co-occurrence of syncope and complete atrioventricular block associated with pulmonary thromboembolism is very rare, and only a few cases have been reported in the literature 4-8. This association was a complicating factor for the initial diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolism and had clear implications in the outcome of most cases reported 5,7. This study aimed at reporting the case of a patient with this form of presentation and at discussing the clinical, electrocardiographic, pathophysiological, prognostic, and therapeutic aspects of that rare manifestation of pulmonary thromboembolism.

Myocardial infarction, symptomatic third degree atrioventricular block and pulmonary embolism caused by thalidomide: a case report

BACKGROUND Thalidomide has been reported to cause numerous thromboembolic events. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are more common. It can also cause bradycardia and even total atrioventricular block. Rarely, it causes coronary artery spasm and even myocardial infarction. But almost simultaneous onset of myocardial infarction, third degree atrioventricular block and pulmonary embolis...

[Complete atrioventricular block secondary to pulmonary embolism].

We describe a 73-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer and metastatic disease diagnosed in January 2002 (stable when we saw her) who was admitted for sudden dyspnea and presyncope. Complete atrioventricular block was documented, and a temporary pacemaker was implanted. Eight hours after admission she recovered sinus rhythm with left bundle branch block as seen in previous recordings. C...

[Complete atrioventricular block due to hyperkalemia caused by rhabdomyolysis during treatment with statin].

Complete atrioventricular block can occur, among others, in case of hyperkalemia, that is a life-threatening complication of rhabdomyolysis. Statins constitute the medication group that is especially associated with a possibility of muscle complications. Frequency of statin-associated myalgia is 5-10%, and potentially fatal rhabdomyolysis--0.02-0.09%. We describe a male patient who was admitted...

Reflex syncope manifesting as orthostatic complete heart block.

A 52 year old patient presented with orthostatic dizziness and syncope caused by postural heart block. When the patient was supine, atrioventricular conduction was normal but when she assumed the upright posture she developed advanced atrioventricular block rapidly progressing to complete heart block. We are presenting a case of syncope caused by orthostatic heart block.

A rare form of trifascicular block with intermittent complete atrioventricular block in a patient with Chagas disease.

Trifascicular block, which consists of impaired conduction in the three main fascicles of the ventricular conduction system, may progress to high-grade or complete atrioventricular block. Exceptionally, it is possible to register in the same patient paroxysmal alternating atrioventricular block and bilateral bundle branch block. This is the electrocardiogram of a male, 60 year-old patient comin...
